about

Four extended pieces inspired by specific pieces of poetry. The first and third, both string quartets, grew out of readings of two of Eliot's Four Quartets (Little Gidding and East Coker respectively). The first orchestral piece (really a double saxophone concerto) started as a response to Anselm Hollo's stark poem Message from the Border. The last piece, a concerto for piano, josephine harmonie and strings, is strongly based on the old song The Trees They Do Grow High. The quartets are both quite tough (as befits a rejoinder to Eliot) – brutalist meets high romance, I guess. The saxophone concerto is bleak, high mountains and deep lochs in midwinter, enfolding a rather feverish hobbled ländler (at least, that's what it started out as). The piano concerto is a strongly layered piece - the piano is a commentary on the harmonie (oboes, clarinets, horns and bassoons) while the strings alternate between a further commentary and an atmospheric pad. For all the music's pain, writing it was a complete joy.

But it doesn't always do quite what it says on the tin... ... more
