Back as a teenager, it wasn't Revolver that first hit home for me, nor even Sgt. Pepper, but the White album. Here I began to sense the glorious possibilities of musical style. Later, I would tussle with the composer Roberto Gerhard's claim that “if style is the man, no man can have two”. Forgiving his language, I feel the integrity he tries to embody, but of course style is not the man, or woman, or individual, any more than the man, the woman, the individual, is stable in the face shown to the world. And within the White album, it was Revolution 9, which I encountered at the same time as Stockhausen's Hymnen and Berio's Sinfonia, which demonstrated to me that what others proclaimed as stylistic gulfs could be traversed with merely a light skip. This album's title is merely the most memorable quote from Revolution 9.
