about

Piano music without notes seems pretty inconceivable (what key do I press?), but no less inconceivable is some field which lends continuity to the notes (what key do I press next?). It would be foolish to declare that I'm not interested in the notes (I'm not John Cage, after all), but I am perhaps more interested in what ties them together: in concepts of line, of shape, of gesture, of weight and force, texture, torsion, momentum, balance and disruption, density, repetition, rhetoric, register (and even harmony). After all, as many an exhausted teacher has said to many an unimaginative student, “the music is what happens between the notes”. Trying to pin down what it was I was trying to do in flowing this music, the phrase 'sculpting time through motion' comes closer than anything else I've found. Listen through the notes to the music.
